Because there is a growing need for nurse practitioners in the medical industry, steps are being taken all across the country to encourage nurses and those interested in nursing to pursue the advanced degree (or degrees) necessary to become a certified nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioner scholarships are offered by schools and outside associations to help defray the cost of obtaining that master’s or doctorate degree.

American Association Of Colleges Of Nursing

These may be bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level students who are attending an institution that is a member of AACN. Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation

If you visit the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation online at nphealthcarefoundation.org, you will find a number of scholarships made available by this organization. For example, the NPHF teams up with Proctor & Gamble to offer the NPHF/Proctor & Gamble Endowed Scholarship in Community Service. This scholarship awards $1,000 to one graduate student each year, who has had a positive impact on his or her school, the community, or the healthcare field.

Minority Nurse

There are many scholarships available at minoritynurse.com. Some are available to undergraduate students seeking a career as a registered nurse. Others, like the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Scholarship, are offered to graduate students. This particular scholarship provides $5,000 to an outstanding male or female nursing student who is a native to Alaska and who is attending school in Alaska as well.

American College Of Nurse Practitioners

Each year, the American College of Nurse Practitioners provides a scholarship in the amount of $1,000, plus a one-year complimentary membership to the ACNP. Applicants must produce two letters of recommendations, be enrolled in an accredited program, and carry an overall grade point average of 3.4 or greater. In addition, the applicant should have something on their application that stands out, like recognition ro health related community service, participation in one or more community health promoting programs, or having had a written work published in a respected journal. The US Army

The United States Army offers the Health Professions Scholarship Program. This program is designed to offer incentive to serve in the Army for at least one tour once you have completed your advanced degree. Any person pursuing a degree in nursing, dentistry, optometry, or psychology from an accredited institution is eligible for a scholarship equal to the total cost of your graduate degree, plus a $20,000-signing bonus.  You can learn more about this scholarship program at goarmy.com.

University Of Tennessee Medical Group

The UTMG Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Scholarship is aimed at students currently enrolled in the University of Tennessee Health Services College in nursing, and carrying a grade point average of 3.0 or greater. A nursing student who qualifies for in-state tuition, has demonstrated leadership skills, and is willing to sign a 36-month contract with the UT Medical Center, can receive a scholarship for their master’s program in the amount of their entire tuition cost. University of Illinois At Chicago

Students already enrolled in the nurse practitioner program at the University of Illinois at Chicago are eligible for the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to exceptional students who are interested in working with children in a hospital or medical office setting. You can apply at uic.edu. Of course, you must be enrolled at UIC, and you must be able to show evidence of an excellent grade point average and your active involvement with the community and the college.

George Mason University

At George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, students are eligible for a number of different scholarships and grants offered by alumni from the university. For example, graduate students in the school of health care are eligible for the John C. and Louise P. Wood Graduate Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. This scholarship will go to any student pursuing their masters degree in a health related field, including nurse practitioners who choose to specialize in family practice, pediatrics, or a wide range of other areas. University of Central Missouri

Graduate students at the University of Central Missouri who are pursuing a master’s degree online in nursing and are in good standing with the institution are eligible for the Rolf and Shaw Nurse Practitioner Scholarship. This scholarship, in the amount of $5,000, is offered to two outstanding students each year to offer incentive and assistance in finishing and graduating from the program. U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services

In response to the shortage of nurses and nurse practitioners in the medical field, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers scholarships to graduate level students pursuing careers as nurse practitioners. The scholarship amounts to 60% of the tuition costs but requires a 2-year post graduate commitment to the USHHS. You can learn more at hrsa.gov.
